El Convento de Guildford fue fundado en...

El Convento de Guildford fue fundado en 1274 por Eleanor de Provenza, viuda de Enrique III. Los monjes del convento eran dominicos, conocidos como los “monjes negros” por sus túnicas. Vivían principalmente gracias a las limosnas, y usaban su monasterio como una base para sus pequeñas salidas para rezar en los alrededores.
El edificio del convento se demolió en 1538 y en su lugar se erigió una mansión, la cual fue llamada El convento. Nuevamente el edificio desapareció, esta vez siendo derrumbado para hacer lugar al desarrollo industrial y las necesidades que se avecinaban.

En 1860 se construyó un nuevo edificio que albergaría la fábrica local de cerveza. Ésta cerró en los setenta, siendo posteriormente demolida para el nuevo Centro Comercial El Convento”, el cual abrió en 1983.


Hoy en día la plaza es un punto de paso para miles de personas que se dirigen al centro de la ciudad para trabajar, al igual que otras muchas personas que usan el lugar para pasar unas horas entre amigos, de compras o para esperar al taxi (la parada de taxis más grande del centro está aquí).
